I Took Your Place

Morning Story and Dilbert

Vintage Dilbert – May 7, 1998

One day, a man went to visit a church. He arrived early, parked his car, and got out. Another car pulled up near him, and the driver told him, “I always park there. You took my place!”

The visitor went inside for Sunday school, found an empty seat, and sat down. A young lady from the church approached him and stated, “That’s my seat. You took my place!” The visitor was somewhat distressed by this rude welcome, but said nothing.

After Sunday school, the visitor went into the church sanctuary and sat down. Another member walked up to him and said, “That’s where I always sit. You took my place!” The visitor was even more troubled by this treatment, but still said nothing.

Later, as the congregation was praying for Christ to dwell among them, the visitor stood, and his appearance began to change. Horrible scars became visible on his hands and on his sandaled feet.

Someone from the congregation noticed him and called out, “What happened to you?” The Visitor replied, “I took your place.”

  1. Excellent piece of writing….a person never knows who they are speaking to, so they should always put forth their best. Second, the fact that Jesus didn’t express his discomfort Is the exact reason people blow up. So, though I see the big picture; I always realized a smaller one!!!! Either way thanks for challenging me to think so early in the morning….keeps my brain sharp and my heart productive!!!!

Wow. You never know. Just be good and kind to everyone. Love your neighbour as yourself. That’s how to show you love God.

Church is a scary place. I have an appointment with a local Pastor one week from today to see about re-entering some sort of Christian fellowship. Now I’m nervous.

  12. So awesome. We never know what positive impact we can have on someone. It could be negative–it is up to us. We should always welcome and treat others better than we would want to be treated–we need to walk in their shoes… Thanks for sharing this. Take care!
