Don’t Quit

Morning Story and Dilbert

Vintage Dilbert
December 5, 2014

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit!

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure has turned about,
When they might have won had they stuck it out.
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow!
Often the goal is nearer than It seems to a faint and faltering one,
Often the struggler has given up
When they might have captured the victor’s cup.
And they learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close they were to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint to the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far.
So stick to the task when you’re hardest hit,
It’s when things seem the worst, that you must not quit!

This came at a very magical time for me today…I was sitting here thinking of my mother and this was waiting in my reader! It was one of her favourite poems by Helen Steiner Rice! Blessing of peace and love be yours!

It would be really nice to be able to credit that author with his/her poem that I imagine has encouraged so very many.

My beloved grandfather used to tell us this poem. The consensus online seems to be that Edgar A. Guest was the author (not Helen Steiner Rice), but it’s not one hundred percent clear. In any case, it’s a wonderful poem. Thank you for posting it.

  7. Its what i need for my day…!!! Thank you so much for such an inspiring post..
