Using Regular People

Morning Story and Dilbert

March 31, 2000

I was driving home from a meeting this evening about 5, stuck in traffic on Colorado Blvd., and the car started to choke and splutter and die – I barely managed to coast, cursing, into a gas station, glad only that I would not be blocking traffic and would have a somewhat warm spot to wait for the tow truck It wouldn’t even turn over. Before I could make the call, I saw a woman walking out of the quickie mart building, and it looked like she slipped on some ice and fell into a gas pump, so I got out to see if she was okay.

When I got there, it looked more like she had been overcome by sobs than that she had fallen; she was a young woman who looked really haggard with dark circles under her eyes. She dropped something as I helped her up, and I picked it up to give it to her. It was a nickel.

At that moment, everything came into focus for me: the crying woman, the ancient Suburban crammed full of stuff with 3 kids in the back (1 in a car seat), and the gas pump reading $4.95.

I asked her if she was okay and if she needed help, and she just kept saying ‘I don’t want my kids to see me crying! ,’ so we stood on the other side of the pump from her car. She said she was driving to California and that things were very hard for her right now. So I asked, ‘And you were praying?’ That made her back away from me a little, but I assured her I was not a crazy person and said, ‘He heard you, and He sent me.’

I took out my card and swiped it through the card reader on the pump so she could fill up her car completely, and while it was fueling, walked to the next door McDonald’s and bought 2 big bags of food, some gift certificates for more, and a big cup of coffee. She gave the food to the kids in the car, who attacked it like wolves, and we stood by the pump eating fries and talking a little.

She told me her name, and that she lived in Kansas City. Her boyfriend left 2 months ago and she had not been able to make ends meet. She knew she wouldn’t have money to pay rent Jan. 1, and finally, in desperation, had called her parents, with whom she had not spoken in about 5 years. They lived in California and said she could come live with them and try to get on her feet there.

So she packed up everything she owned in the car. She told the kids they were going to California for Christmas, but not that they were going to live there.

I gave her my gloves, a little hug and said a quick prayer with her for safety on the road. As I was walking over to my car, she said, ‘So, are you like an angel or something?’

This definitely made me cry. I said, ‘Sweetie, at this time of year angels are really busy, so sometimes God uses regular people.’

It was so incredible to be a part of someone else’s miracle. And of course, you guessed it, when I got in my car it started right away and got me home with no problem. I’ll put it in the shop tomorrow to check, but I suspect the mechanic won’t find anything wrong.

  2. If everyone in the world did one nice thing for someone else, i wonder what kind of impact that would make. I imagine it would be something much more powerful than anyone could imagine. Recently, I have been going through a hard time, and only yesterday I blogged about a friend who surprised me with flowers and a cell phone, and note wishing me luck on my fresh start. It touched my heart in such a positive way, and it meant more to me than I could ever imagine. Thank you to and anyone, who acts as our little angels on earth.. 🙂

  6. Puts things into perspective for us. What befalls us may seem like really bad luck but if we keep our eyes opened we can see that there are worse things that are going on for other people and they might need our help.

  7. What an amazing story. God indeed works in mysterious ways. The person who did this…may your life be filled with infinite blessings and sadness may never touch you in anyway. Amen

  8. Thank you for sharing this touching story. Many times we read these things and marvel at how God uses all those people. But I am sure these opportunities exist for all of us, to be angels for other people. We just need to be more alert, more aware, and less hesitant 🙂 Wouldn’t it be awesome for someone to feel God’s love through us 🙂

Finding an opportunity to help someone is a wonderful experience if the “Act” is done in “Love.”

This week is all set to be a busy and fun one!
-I’ve been working closely with DEMDACO (Yay!) on some new artwork and products that will launch later this year or early next year. (Such FUN!)

-I am revving up for the Art Journaling Workshop on Thursday and already filling spots for April’s Workshop! I’ve been writing the curriculum, planning the menu and tucking Winter away in the basement where it belongs so that I can make room for Spring in my home just in time for Thursday’s guests.

-On that same note, I am in the early stages of talking with someone (Can’t tell you who until it’s official!) about leading a group of 200-400 women through Art Journaling for a weekend retreat later this year!!! It’s SO incredibly exciting I can hardly contain myself from happy dancing all day everyday! Praying that the Lord has his hand on me and all the people involved in making this happen. I would appreciate a little prayer and will keep you posted on the outcome!

So with all this going on, I’ve had to say no to some things and set some things aside that I had planned on -like Easter Printables, SO wanting to create some, so realizing that there is only so much time in a day and so many days in the week. I don’t think this is going to happen this year, but you never know! And this will be a light blogging week for me in order to dedicate all of my time to making sure the Workshop is as fabulous as my guests deserve. So today-I am re-blogging an amazing story from another blog. I just know you will enjoy it so I feel no guilt about not mustering up my own post today. Lol Hope you feel the same!

  14. You know what I am always giving, I always giving I think with the right motive expecting nothing in return
I give because I see the need, but I have never had something like this happen to me where I receive spontaneous help.
This still has to happen to me now I will keep giving and keep helping and leave it into the hands of my Eternal Creator.

  15. I was led by the Lord to give an offering through the church (anonymously) to a couple in the church who were on hard times. Some time later they testified that it was the amount they needed to have brakes repaired on their car, brakes that made it unsafe to drive…I cannot tell you the blessing it was to hear how God took something of what I had to take care of a couple of His children who didn’t have – and they didn’t know who did it.
