Tears of a Woman

“Mom, why are you crying?” he asked his mom.

“Because I’m a woman” she told him.

“I don’t understand,” he said.

His mom just hugged him and said, “and you never will.” Later the little boy asked his father, “Why does mother seem to cry for no reason?”

“All women cry for no reason” was all his dad could say.

The little boy grew up and became a man, still wondering why women cry.

Finally he put in a call to GOD. When GOD got on the phone the man said, “GOD, why do women cry so easily?”

GOD said:

“When I made women she had to be special. I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world; yet, gentle enough to give comfort.

I gave her an inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times comes from her children.

I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up and take care of her family through sickness and fatigue without complaining.

I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances, even when her child has hurt her very badly. This same sensitivity helps her to make a child’s boo-boo feel better and shares in her teenagers anxieties and fears.

I gave her strength to carry her husband through his faults and fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart.

I gave her wisdom to know that a good husband never hurts his wife, but sometimes tests her strengths and her resolve to stand beside him unfalteringly.

I gave her a tear to shed, it’s hers exclusively to use whenever it is needed. It’s her only weakness; it’s a tear for mankind.”

  2. This rings so true to me as I approach the anniversary of Mom’s death. She was Dad’s strength – right till the day he died. I understand her so much more today than I ever have. Even through death, we continue to teach, or so it would seem. My Mom is my eternal teacher. Thank-you for this post.

  3. Tears are not for women only. I view tears of compassion or conviction from men to reveal a tender heart. Manly men who cry, I find, are very strong in character. My husband cried.

  6. Thank you for the posting and the comments, all. I enjoy the expounding on this concept of tears. I look forward to your daily posts, and I’ve had a cup of coffee & chuckled over your vintage dilbert.

    Let me suggest, however, that we reframe this (as I believe God intended): tears are not a weakness. For so many of us, being vulnerable and open enough to shed a tear where another can see us is IN FACT, a beautiful strength. It is the privilege of the beholder to be so close to someone else that she or he will cry in the presence of the beholder.

    We euthanized our elderly dog a few weeks ago. I knew it was coming and wasn’t aware of my reaction until my husband told the story of Buddy going to live with him while my husband and I were still dating. Steve cried, wiped his eyes and left the room as our Vet and I stayed to give Buddy the injection.

    Steve’s tears were a release for all the emotions and chemicals swimming through his system. The Irish say “your bladder is too close to your eyes.” I’m glad Steve’s is!

  15. 🙂 Wow…Kenny! You are getting to me with these Mom ones. For me, the tears are not the weakness but a sign that I care too deeply. Caring and compassion–are they really signs of weakness? Hmmm… Take care and I really this one. It helps. 😀

  18. Very beautiful post indeed. I love the way that the qualities of a women were cast into the light of gifts bestowed upon us by the grace of God. The differences between men are women are endowed by God and deserve to be respected and celebrated as such. I realise that our differences in gifts is what necessitates that we need one another. Apparent differences or deficiencies are merely moments when our husbands or wives can shine, manifesting their love and support us, as God intended when He blessed us with different and diverse strengths and characteristics. Our gifts are the means whereby we express our individuality for the benefit of community, that is by showing ” Love of our fellow neighbour”.
