What is Evil

Morning Story and Dilbert

February 13, 1995

Once a Professor asked a student what evil is? He replied that he will give the correct answer but before that, the Professor has to answer his question. He asked the Professor whether Cold exists or not? The Professor replied that it does exist.

However he was shocked to hear from the student that he was wrong. He asked the student for explanation.

The student explained that there was nothing like cold but it is just a state of complete absence of heat. He asked the Professor another question. This time it was about the existence of darkness. The question possessed by the student was, “Whether darkness exist or not?”

The Professor without a moments delay replied that it does exist. Again he was shocked to hear from the student that he was wrong. The Professor asked the student to pinpoint the mistake in his answer.
The boy replied that there is nothing like darkness. It is actually the complete absence of light.

The boy continued, according to physics we can study light and heat but not darkness and cold. Similarly sir, the evil does not exist. Actually it is the absence of faith, love and true belief in GOD.

The Professor was surprised to hear the answer from his student.

Do you know who the student mentioned in the above story was?

He is none other than Albert Einstein..!

Good evening Kenny T. Thank you for posting this. I was going to do this give my post my post “Does Evil Exist.” Now I don’t have to. May I use this as reference material as a link?

  2. Well
I am afraid that the problem of the Evil is much more complex than that.

  3. Food for thought here, but this time I’m afraid I disagree with Einstein. From my biblical worldview, evil most certainly exists. Yes, it could be defined simply as a lack of faith, love, and true belief in God; that’s not a wrong definition, but it’s only one definition. In my work as a counselor, I am often face to face with active, deliberate evil and malice, which is a totally different thing from lack of faith, love, and true belief in God. It has its own identity, its own existence.

  6. Thinking. . . In I Timothy we are told that the love of money is the root of all evil. Satan is the cheif instigator and it was his greed that caused his fall. In a perfect world, Heaven, evil will not exist. That is impossible in this world, however. Self perfection is not possible; only forgiveness. We certainly have a choice, however, to let love abound and self discipline conquor evil actions. Just saying. . .

Actually, in 1 Timothy 6:10, Paul tells Timothy that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, not of all evil.

One could argue that Satan’s fall was more aptly attributed to pride. This sin is typically the one that keeps people from salvation.

  7. It’s funny how I read this story somewhere else earlier today. Einstein, ahead of his time.

    Hi,
I enjoy stopping by every day. This is thought provoking, but I don’t agree. James 2:19 says, “You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.”

I agree with Julien… On an emotional level, I get it and it feels good, but evil is more than that because there is good and evil in everyone, therefore it is possible to do an evil thing without a complete lack of faith love and God.

  12. That is a great example of the light and goodness of God. I agree with a previous reply. Evil definiely does exist. I still like the analogy. Evil exists that is far beyond the imagination of most people.
