The Perfectionist Sculptor

February 11, 1991
A gentleman once visited a temple under construction where he saw a sculptor making a statue of God.
Suddenly he noticed a similar statue lying nearby. Surprised, he asked the sculptor, “Do you need two copies of the same statue?”
“No,” said the sculptor without looking up, “We need only one, but the first one got damaged at the last stage.”
The gentleman examined the statue and found no apparent damage. “Where is the damage?” he asked.
“There is a scratch on the nose.” said the sculptor, still busy with his work.
“Where are you going to install the statue?”
The sculptor replied that it would be installed on a pillar twenty feet high.
“If the statue is that high, who is going to know that there is a scratch on the nose?” the gentleman asked.
The sculptor stopped his work, looked up at the gentleman, smiled and said,
“I know it and God knows it!”

I thought God doesn’t like Idols?

Thats a point! I don’t like them at all, I think it makes us, once again in a humanistic fashion, worship earthy things instead of looking up to God literally. I get the story behind it, its nice and all, but seeing as idols are specifically mentioned as being pretty negative (!!!) in the Bible then I think the idea behind this story could have been used with a different image/metaphore/whatever the word is.

ya me too even though m a hindu i stil dnt believe in idol wordshipping , but the idea of the sculptors’s devotion is touching.

The story shows that we should do our work in an excellent way – cause in the end we don’t work for people but for God! So it should be the best we can give.

Understanding the concept of idols as negative, I still like the application–a lot. We forget too often than God does know our hearts. Good reminder.

This shows such dedication and commitment for the man to do the best he could. We should always do our best whether it is in direct relation to God (actually everything is) or not… We shouldn’t do only what we can get by with. Why or what does it matter…? It matters. We need to do a self-check when it doesn’t matter. Thanks, Kenny. 🙂

I didn’t take this story to be one about idols at all… I just see that we should always do our best because even if no one else is watching, God is. Good post!

Excuse me, but isn’t anything worshipped an idol (I mean everything) when we do not give thanks to God for it, giving God praise and glory of the sculptors talent, giving praise and glory to God, for a loved one, for money, for seeds, for the food on the table (everything). God is the living God and I thank Kenny for the writing, I read after the fact.

The original post for The Perfectionist Sculptor had the word IDOL in place of God. I made the change after it was brought to my attention by another reader. The first thing that came to mind for me Kenny after reading this was what Paul told the church at Collose “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
We all need to remember that whatever we do is seen by the Father and our Lord Jesus.
I didn’t take this an ‘idol’ thing at all. It’s a great reminder to give everything we do to the Lord, no matter how simple or complex the task.
